KHATTA MEETHA KADDU | कद्दू की खट्टी मीठी सब्जी | SWEET AND SOUR PUMPKIN RECIPE

Pumpkin is one of the healthiest vegetables, full of calcium, potassium, phosphorous, copper etc., pumpkin is even a good source of dietary fiber. Its seeds are full of vitamins, proteins, and minerals.

Khatta meetha kaddu is a flavorful preparation wherein chunks of pumpkin are cooked with lots of spices giving an array of flavors. Khatta means sour, meetha means sweet and kaddu means pumpkin in English, and as the name goes this preparation has these essences in a balanced manner and that’s what makes this simple preparation.

Pumpkin, when cooked properly, can beat any Bhindi or Potato. And Khatta Meetha Kaddu recipe is the best example of the this, cooked using basic spices, Khatta Meetha Kaddu or sweet and sour pumpkin curry can be made on the usual weekdays and even during weekends when your family sits together for a lovely, homely meal.

INGREDIENTS FOR KHATTA MEETHA KADDU –

  • 500 g Pumpkin (Kaddu), partly peeled, partly unpeeled and cut into small cubes
  • 3 tbsp oil
  • ¼ tsp Asafoetida (heeng)
  • 1 & ½ tsp Panch phoron
  • 3 Broken Red chilies
  • 1&½ tsp-2 tsp Red chili flakes/powder
  • ¼ tsp Turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1-1& ½ tsp Dry mango (amchur) powder
  • 2-3 tsp Sugar or 50 gm Gur / Jaggery

INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING –

  1. Heat oil in a pan.
  2. When the oil is hot, add heeng, sarson and dry red chili and let them crackle for a few seconds.
  3. Add 1&½ tsp Panch phoron. Cook on low flame till aromatic, approximately 2 minutes.
  4. Add Kaddu, salt, red chili powder, turmeric powder and coriander powder and mix well.
  5. Cover the pan and cook the kaddu on low heat for 10-12 minutes till done.
  6. Cook till pumpkin is soft, Do not overcook otherwise kaddu will turn mushy.
  7. Sprinkle little water if required.
  8. Next goes in a mix of flavors, Add 1 tsp dry mango powder and 2 tsp sugar or Gur.
  9. Mix everything well. Do not cover. Cook for 2-3 minutes.
  10. Put off the flame and it is ready to be served.

  Garnish with fresh coriander and Serve Khatta Meetha Kaddu with Poori/ Paratha and boondi raita.
